Musical Madness

“You can exchange the word ‘Reefer’ in Reefer Madness with just about any controversial issue today, and the film would still be relevant. Iraq War Madness, Abortion Madness, Gay Madness, whatever,” says Andy Fickman, the openly gay director of the new movie musical.

Fickman contends that the original 1936 anti-marijuana movie, on which the musical version is based, distorted the truth in order to control the country’s “morals,” and that big business actually helped initiate that battle in “the war on drugs.”

Thailand's "Beautiful Boxer"

A walk on the controversial side

Walk on Water director Eytan Fox was joined by his producer, Gal Uchovsky, during an interview in Toronto last fall. That’s not unusual. But Fox introduced the casually dressed man by saying, “We make films together, and Gal is my spouse, as well. We’ve lived together for the last 16 years.”

While the openly gay couple’s partnership isn’t secret, it’s not widely publicized, either. “We usually don’t give interviews together,” Fox said. Uchovsky simply stated, while waving his hand Queen Elizabeth style, “We don’t want to give the image of the royal couple.”
